In short, Trump’s New York congestion comment was classic dead cat. In the same Truth Social message, the former president mused about the impact of congestion pricing elsewhere in the world. After all, congestion pricing has been introduced in a number of cities, from Singapore to Stockholm, over the past 25-odd years. I live about four miles from the edge of the congestion zone, and it’s never once been a problem to circumvent. By most metrics, London’s congestion pricing experiment has been a resounding success.

Spanish bank BBVA caught markets by surprise on Thursday after it announced a rare hostile takeover bid for domestic rival Banco Sabadell, with one investment firm describing the situation as "very strange." The move comes shortly after a separate 12 billion euro ($12.87 billion) takeover offer from BBVA to Sabadell's board was rejected earlier in the week. BBVA said its takeover offer has the same financial terms as the merger offered to Sabadell's board. Shares of BBVA fell 6% at around midday London time on Thursday, while Sabadell's stock price rose more than 3%.

With all hope seemingly lost, Madrid’s substitute striker Joselu turned the tie on its head after scoring two goals in the space of three minutes. This time, VAR could not be used to check the incredibly tight decision because the referee had blown his whistle. “It almost feels like a betrayal because of that decision,” Tuchel told TNT Sports after the match. From fan to heroAfter the full-time whistle, Madrid celebrated in style as it crowned Joselu the club’s new hero. As a forward, you dream of scoring goals, and if they’re like tonight’s, then even better,” Joselu said after the match.

The brainchild of Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, “the Portal” was unveiled on Wednesday and allows people on either side of the Atlantic to interact with each other via a video link. The idea was “conceived as a testament to the power of art to transcend physical barriers,” reads the press release from Gylys and officials from New York City and Dublin. The Dublin portal will also connect with other installations in Lithuania and Poland from July onwards, said de Róiste in the statement. While I dread these altercations, I think some passengers need to chill out — people have the right to recline their seat. So, you’d think that 150 lighter seats per flight will certainly save an airline a ton of money. A lighter seat that doesn’t recline is also a seat that is less likely to break, which saves an airline money in repairs. But after 28 years in the job, I’ve found there’s some basic reclining etiquette that makes for a smoother flight for everyone. But on coach, middle seat passengers struggle to type because there’s no arm space.

Variegated tulips planted in flower beds opposite the Bank of England in the City of London on 7th May 2024 in London, United Kingdom. =LONDON — The Bank of England is set to hold interest rates steady at its Thursday meeting, with traders expected to pore over the details of Governor Andrew Bailey's statement as anticipation builds for a potential summer rate cut. The BOE's Monetary Policy Committee is widely expected to keep the Bank Rate at 5.25%, with an announcement due at midday. The latest March meeting saw eight votes to keep rates steady and one to cut. It's going to reach target pretty soon, and that will put the Bank under a lot of pressure to start normalizing policy."

There's a split internally at $65 billion Marshall Wace. The 27-year-old London-based hedge fund, founded by Paul Marshall and Ian Wace, has prided itself on its collaborative culture. Multi-strategy mightThe culture shift at Marshall Wace is just the latest ripple effect to come from the vast expansion of power, assets, and clout of the largest multi-strategy hedge funds. For Marshall Wace, that looks like a charge that can be up to 0.75% of the $22.4 billion Eureka fund's value — more than $150 million — on top of the set management fees and variable performance fees the firm already charges. A person close to the firm said that certain people still have access to aggregated positions, but the restriction helps Marshall Wace manage "complexity and confidentiality" as the manager continues to grow.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey addresses the media during the central bank's Monetary Policy Report press conference at the Bank of England, in London, Britain, on February 1, 2024. LONDON — Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey on Thursday played down any political pressure received by his institution, confirming that a rate cut immediately before a General Election wouldn't be out of the question. This is especially true in election cycles if citizens are dealing with an economic downturn or a cost-of-living squeeze. The Bank of England, which became officially independent in 1998, is no stranger to this pressure with elections expected before the end of this year. The Bank is nearing its first rate cut since 2020, despite holding steady on Thursday.

LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday announced a widely-expected hold on interest rates following its May meeting, as it said restrictive monetary policy was working to bring down inflation. Members of the central bank's Monetary Policy Committee voted 7-2 to hold, with the latter favoring a cut. In the prior meeting only one member voted for a cut. It keeps the BOE's key Bank Rate at 5.25%. Some economists see a cut as soon as the next meeting in June, and three or more cuts in 2024.

A UK-based AI startup, founded last month by former Cohere employees, is already in talks to raise a major pre-seed round amid venture capitalists' continued spending spree in the sector. Convergence AI, incorporated at the end of April, was founded by ex-Cohere employees Marvin Purtorab and Andy Toulis, who was also a machine learning engineer at Uber. Its primary aim, per leaked investor documents seen by BI, is to build out automated workforces using AI. The nascent business has been feted by several leading funds, with the company receiving at least six different term sheets for investment, two London-based sources said. The startup opted for a funding round led by London-based Balderton Capital, six sources familiar with the deal told Business Insider.

LONDON — Members of Britain's exclusive all-male Garrick Club has reportedly voted to permit women to join the institution for the first time in its 193-year history. The historic vote comes after the club has been under immense scrutiny over recent weeks following the publication by the U.K.'s Guardian newspaper of some of the elite club's most influential members. The closely-guarded membership list showed the club to be an emblem of Britain's patriarchal establishment, with the majority of members white and aged over 50. Notable public figures from the arts, including actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Brian Cox, were also named. The Garrick Club, named after the 18th-century actor David Garrick, was founded in 1831 as a place where "actors and men of refinement and education might meet on equal terms," according to a statement on the club's website.

London CNN —FTX has recovered enough assets to pay most of its creditors back in full, the failed crypto exchange said late Tuesday as it unveiled a proposed reorganization plan. “The plan contemplates payment in full of all non-governmental creditors based on the value of their claims as determined by the (relevant) bankruptcy court,” FTX said in a statement. Ray, a restructuring specialist, took over as CEO in November 2022 to shepherd what was left of the firm through bankruptcy. “We are pleased to be in a position to propose a Chapter 11 (bankruptcy) plan that contemplates the return of 100% of bankruptcy claim amounts plus interest for non-governmental creditors,” John J. Ray III, FTX CEO and chief restructuring officer, said in Tuesday’s statement. If his plan is approved by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District Court of Delaware, FTX expects that 98% of its creditors will receive approximately 118% of the amount of their allowed claims, FTX said.
